Please note that the Nairobi Gallery Museum, located next to Nyayo House in the city center, will be closed for fumigation from Friday, April 26, to Sunday, April 28.

Normal operations will resume on Monday, April 29, from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.

The Nairobi Gallery Museum, established in 1913 to accommodate the Native Ministry, holds significant historical importance.

Known colloquially as ‘Hatches, Matches and Dispatches’ by the settler community, it served as a recording center for births, marriages, and deaths.

Formerly a colonial courthouse, the building facilitated trials and sentencing of natives accused of entering Nairobi without a pass before independence.

After independence, it housed the Nairobi province office until 1983, when operations were relocated to Nyayo House.

Subsequently, the building served as the Nairobi branch office for Kanu (Kenya African National Union), the ruling party at the time, until 1999.

Due to its historical significance, the Old P.C.’s building was gazetted by the government on 22/10/93 Gazette Notice 5257 and confirmed on 19/04/95 Gazette Notice 2016.

This closure follows shortly after the Nairobi National Museum Galleries were closed for four days for scheduled maintenance.

The Museum of Kenya has announced the closure of the galleries from Monday, March 11, to Thursday, March 14, for fumigation.

During this time, the Nairobi Snake Park will remain operational for visitors interested in touring. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
