UoN students directed to pay for food on eCitizen platform

University of Nairobi students will now have to make payments through the eCitizen platform while purchasing food from the institution's restaurants. 

The varsity's administration in a memo gave details on how the payments will be made. 

"The Kenyan government has mandated that all payments to the University of Nairobi be made via the eCitizen platform. Complying with this directive, the university has established the required systems to enable clients to make payments through eCitizen," a memo shared to students read in part. 

The memo directed that students use government paybill number 222222 to make their payments using Mpesa services. 

"Enter Account Number: Outlet/Live identifier in capital letters followed by a hyphen and your name e.g NUK1-name," the memo said. 

This comes after the government also directed National Secondary schools to make fee payments through the eCitizen platform. 

In a circular addressed to all principals of national schools on January 31, 2024, Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang instructed the submission of the institution's bank account details to facilitate the onboarding process.

 "The directorate of eCitizen, in collaboration with the Information Communication Technology Authority (ICTA), Ministry of Information, Communication and the Digital Economy, and the National Treasury, is coordinating the onboarding of all government services onto the eCitizen platform to enhance service delivery, " reads the statement.

To ensure compliance, parents and guardians are directed to make fee payments through the eCitizen platform.

Principals were asked to furnish key financial information to the office of the Director General, State Department for Basic Education, by February 6, 2024.

The government will subsequently guide the school fee payment process once all bank account details are collected.

To meet this directive's objective, the required information must reach the Office of the Director General by the specified deadline. Submissions should be made via email to dg@education.go.ke, with a copy sent to sa.basic@education.go.ke.

This initiative aims to expand the user base of eCitizen, attracting new users in addition to the existing 11 million who utilize the service daily.
