A tragic road accident occurred on Saturday evening at Mahiga Meeru area along the Nyahururu-Nyeri road, resulting in the loss of five lives and injuries to nine individuals.

The victims, including the driver and women from St. Peter's Gaitega, part of the Cathedral Parish of the Catholic Diocese of Murang’a, were returning home after attending a National prayer meeting at Subukia’s Marian Shrine, organized by the Catholic Women Association (CWA) on Friday evening.

The group was traveling in a matatu when the accident happened, and the injured individuals have been admitted to various hospitals.

Three survivors were treated at Nyahururu County and Referral Hospital, two of whom were discharged, while another is admitted with head injuries.

The bodies of the four who perished were taken to the Nyahururu County Hospital Mortuary. Other survivors were transported to different hospitals in Nyeri County.

Survivors reported that the driver of the 14-seater vehicle attempted to avoid colliding with an oncoming trailer, but the trailer, seemingly with brake failure, lost control and collided with their vehicle.

Nyandarua County Women's Representative Faith Gitau assisted survivors at the scene. An investigation into the accident has been initiated by the police, highlighting the need for urgent measures to address the increasing number of accidents in the country.

With an annual toll of up to 4,000 lives lost and numerous injuries, these incidents have significant and far-reaching consequences for families nationwide.
