Police in Oyugis are holding Maurine Anyango aged 32 on suspicion of killing and burying her new born.

Maurine Anyango was arrested on Saturday night after her neighbors became suspicious when they did not see the one-day-old baby.

She is being held at Oyugis police station in Rachuonyo South sub-county.

Maurine is suspected of killing her newborn child and burying her on a farm in Kawiti village, Kamuma Sub Location.

According to Kamuma sub-location Assistant Chief Colins Joram, the mother of three gave birth on Thursday in the village and was assisted by a community health promoter in delivering the baby girl before returning home.

Her children reported seeing their mother immerse her last child in cold water on Friday, and when they returned home from school later that day, they discovered the baby on the bed and wrapped it in a white towel.

According to the administrator, later that night, the woman asked her sixth-grade daughter to accompany her to a farm in the neighborhood, where she buried the body in a box.

Her neighbors became suspicious on Saturday and reported the incident to the area assistant chief, who went straight to the house and questioned the children, who then revealed what had happened.

The suspect led police to the location where she buried the baby, and with the assistance of officers from the Oyugis police station, the body was exhumed and the woman was immediately arrested.
