The Kenya Revenue Authority has announced all tax payments via mobile money will be made through PayBill 222 222.

This is the government's single payment platform introduced in 2022.

In a statement, the authority said the changes are with immediate effect in line with the Kenya Gazette No. 16008 of 2022 and the Presidential Directive.

"Use the Payment Registration Number (PRN) or the Ref. Number on the Payment Slips generated from KRA Business Systems: iTax, iCMS, EGMS, and KESRA iStudent as the account number when making tax payments via mobile money," part of the statement read.

To pay via mobile money, the customers will enter 222222 on their sim tool kit, enter PRN, key in the amount, and then pin number.

Further, the customer-to-business taxpayers can dial *222#, select the pay by KRA bill option, enter the e-slip (PRN) number, select payment method as MPesa, and then pin to complete payment.

The government had in December 2022, announced all state transactions would be migrated to an online payment portal, as the government unveiled a new universal pay bill number, 222222.

“All payments for Government services shall progressively be made through eCitizen.go.ke. The official Government of Kenya Pay Bill Number is 222222,” reads the notice.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndungu noted that the official identifier of citizens shall be one’s National Identity Card number; foreigners shall use an Alien Identity Card number.

Ndung’u further said the digital payments platform is integrated with all available electronic payment platforms in Kenya, including mobile money telephone payment services.

All payments for government services shall be made through the E-citizen portal.

“The Government of the Republic of Kenya has developed the eCitizen.go.ke Digital Payments Platform through which citizens and all persons will be able to pay for government services” reads the gazette notice dated December 20, 2022.

Services provided under the portal include motor vehicle ownership, land searches, birth, and death registrations.
