Man accused of stealing Sh700k from Absa Bank charged

Simon Kipngetich Tonui, A man accused of stealing Sh717,111 from an Absa Bank account held by Aknotela Limited has been charged before Milimani Chief Magistrate's Court.

He is suspected of having committed the offence on various dates between August 7 and September 15, 2023.

He is facing 12 counts of stealing contrary to the law.

According to the charge sheet presented on Monday, August 7, 2023, Tonui is believed to have stolen an Absa Bank Kenya limited visa Business Debit Card valued at Sh460, belonging to one Esther Akoth Kokeyo.

He is suspected to have stolen from the bank's account registered under a company linked to Kokeyo thereafter.

In the charges outlined, in count two, Tonui is accused of stealing Sh264,000 from an Absa Bank account registered under Aknotela Limited, by way of withdrawing the amount by ATM, within Nairobi on various dates between August 7 and September 13.

Counts three and four allege that the accused, on August 8 and 9, withdrew Sh44,000 and on August 31, he withdrew Sh40,000, from the aforementioned account.

According to the prosecution, other counts state that between September 4 and 14, Tonui allegedly withdrew Sh269,111 from the same account belonging to Aknotela Limited.

Further, the charge sheet states:

"Simon Kipngetich Tonui, on September 15, 2023, at Absa Bank Kenya Limited, Umoja Mutindwa Automated Teller Machine (ATM) lobby within Nairobi County, stole Kenya shilling one hundred thousand (Sh100,000) from Absa Bank Kenya in the name Aknotela Ent Limited, the property of Aknotela Ent Limited."

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, he pleaded innocent of the 12 counts.

The court released him on a Sh600,000 bond with one surety or an alternative of Sh300,000 cash bail with one contact person.

The mention date has been set for October 30.
