Following a partnership with Safaricom, Uber users without bank accounts will now be compensated for their journeys using M-Pesa.

On Wednesday, Safaricom announced a partnership with Uber Eats Kenya, under which delivery personnel will be compensated using the mobile money system.

"This partnership will see riders across Kenya pay for trips through M-PESA. This follows a collaboration with Uber Eats that allowed consumers to pay for deliveries through M-PESA and delivery people to also receive their earnings through M-PESA," safaricom said.

According to them, the measure will help drivers without bank accounts, which according to data from Uber, accounts for around 20% of all drivers.

They said that drivers can now benefit from the availability of quick payments. To assure correct and prompt payments for their services on the Uber platform, they said that this was necessary.

Imran Manji, the CEO of Uber East Africa, claimed that the payment method will be practical.

“Through the integration of M-PESA for trip payments, we are excited to bring the ease and convenience of mobile money to riders on our platform,” Manji said.
