The family of former president Uhuru Kenyatta has been told by the authorities to hand over any firearms they may have.

The Firearm Licencing Board in Nairobi will receive 28 firearms that are registered in the family's name.

The Firearm Licencing Board chair Yakub Rashid is heard telling a policeman in a video that he sent him, according to the Star.

This comes after the former president alleged that police searched the residence of his son Jomo Kenyatta in Karen for firearms. Uhuru swore to protect his family from any attacks.

Instead of going after his family, he dared the authorities to confront him head-on.

"The fact that I have been silent does not mean I am scared. Come for me if it is me that you want," Uhuru said.

"I did the best I could do for my country and I handed over when my time was finished and I will now do the best to defend my family."

The former president pleaded with the government to settle any political differences with him alone rather than involving his own family.

"My only plea is don't plan against my mother or my children. Plan for me if it is me you want. What do they have to do with anything," he said.

Uhuru said that many people in Kenya own valid gun licences and obtained their firearms legally.

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki announced on Friday that 23 firearms had been found in three homes in Karen, Nairobi, as a result of an operation that had been started after it was determined that the weapons used in the demonstrations had been provided by civilian gun owners.

"Today afternoon, an operation has been going on targeting three homesteads within the Karen area where a total of 23 firearms, some of which are suspected to have been used in illegal activities are kept," he said.
