According to a Tifa study, 65% of Kenyans oppose the housing levy. That leaves only 29% in favour.

The poll, which was published on Tuesday, reveals that 84% of opposition supporters are against the levy, compared to 54% of backers of the administration.

“Among Kenyans as a whole, only one-quarter express support the housing fund programme at 24 per cent,” the report says.

“To a large extent, such opinions are more a reflection of political alignment than of the details of the programme itself,” it adds.

With a margin of error of +/- 2.5%, the national poll was conducted between June 23 and June 30 among 1,530 respondents by computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI).

Nine zones, including Central Rift, Coast, Lower Eastern, Mt. Kenya, Nairobi, Northern, Nyanza, South Rift, and Western, were used for the interviews.

The purpose of the survey was to learn how Kenyans experienced and viewed the situation of the economy.

The recently passed 2023–24 budget, which included the Finance Bill, which included the hotly fought housing charge, is one of the subjects discussed.

In comparison to just 4% of their opposition peers, supporters of the administration are five times more confident that people who will pay the housing levy will receive a house.

54 percent of Kenyans believe individuals who pay the housing levy won't be able to purchase a home.
