The horrific traffic accident in Londiani, on the Nakuru-Kericho route, claimed the lives of 45 people, and President William Ruto has led Kenyans in grieving.
There were worries that the death toll would reach 55 because some victims were still entangled in the rubble.
The President expressed concern about the fact that some of the accident victims were promising young individuals.
Ruto urged drivers to use caution when driving during this rainy season because he wanted anyone injured to make a rapid recovery.
"The country mourns with the families who have lost loved ones in a horrific road accident in Londiani, Kericho County. It is distressing that some of the fatalities are young people with a promising future and business people who were on their daily chores.
"We pray for the speedy recovery of all survivors; you are in our thoughts. We urge motorists to be extra cautious on roads, especially now when we are experiencing heavy rainfall," the president said in a statement.
It was terrible, according to opposition leader Raila Odinga, that the nation had lost so many individuals in a single accident.
The former prime minister advised additional caution from motorists and other road users.
"This is a sad day for our country…as many children have been orphaned and many widowed... To the injured, we wish them quick recovery," Raila said.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also said the horrific road accident spells unspeakable loss to our nation.
He added that it is painful to lose loved ones at any age, especially in a tragic road accident like this.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones and quick recovery to the survivors of this tragic road accident. I urge maximum care on our roads at all times by all road users."
