A group of herders are counting losses after their eight cows were electrocuted in Rarieda, Siaya.

The owners were Wednesday morning escorting the animals to Akala Market when the incident happened.

The animals are valued at Sh500,000.

Six other animals were injured in the incident.

Witnesses and police said the electrocution was caused by live wires that were hanging on the road.

"Residents had complained about the dangers of the wires in vain. The villagers were escorting a herd of cows to a market when the wires hanging on the road between Oyude and Akala market hit the cows killing eight on the spot," a police officer said.

Kenya power officials were called to the scene and managed to disconnect the power supply before attending to it.

Personnel from the veterinary were also called to inspect the carcasses as locals wanted to slaughter and take away the meat.

Police said officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations are investigating the matter.

Nyanza regional police boss Manasse Musyoka said they will make recommendations on the way forward once the probe is completed.

Cases of electrocution are on the rise and affect both domestic and wild animals and even people in their homes.

They are at times blamed on illegal connections.

There is an ongoing campaign to address the issue.
