The government has said at least 39 people linked to the indoctrination in Shakahola forest in Kilifi County have been arrested.

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki while launching the second phase of the search for the victims, said more suspects will face the law even as the probe intensifies.

"Offences committed constitute some of the greatest crimes against humanity. We've made tremendous progress. We have arrested 39 people so far," he said.

The search will extend to new areas since police have established that people are trying to escape to nearby parks.

The government announced exhumation process will resume immediately after the completion of the second phase of the autopsy at the Malindi Sub County Hospital.

So far he said 241 people have been confirmed dead.

The CS said one follower had died in the hospital on Wednesday evening after refusing to eat.

He said some followers who had been rescued still want to follow the cultic teachings.

The CS further noted that the investigations might take a little longer and called for patience.

"I want to assure you that the security agencies will provide watertight evidence to charge the suspects," he said.

The CS said so far 613 are missing but noted that not all of them are linked to the Shakahola incident.
