Churches of controversial preachers Ezekiel Odero and Paul Mackenzie are facing closure after the Registrar of Societies wrote a show-cause letter to the two.

The State has sent a cancellation notice to Good News International church and New Life Prayer Centre churches over their activities.

AG Justin Muturi through the registrar of societies said the government has asked Makenzie's Good News International church to show cause why the church's registration should not be cancelled.

For the preacher Odero's church, the AG's office says that while the organisation meets all the conditions at the time of registration, it has failed to file tax returns in recent years.

He made the disclosures on Wednesday during a meeting with the senate ad-hoc committee probing deaths in Shakahola, Kilifi County.

This follows allegations that the two churches are involved in cult and extremist activities that have led to the deaths of more than 120 people.

For Good News International church, Mackenzie is listed as the chairperson of the organization.

Last year, the church sought to change its name and officials but this was rejected as the move did not adhere to the provisions of the societies act.

As such, a notice of cancellation of its registration certificate has been issued to its management.
