Police are looking for a gang that raided a liquor shop in Mwiki, Nairobi, and shot dead an attendant before escaping.

The gang shot Daniel Mwangi, 35, in the neck before escaping on foot and after robbing him and his employer of Sh10,000.

The employer told police he was closing business on Sunday and taking stock of the day when he heard a knock on the door.

When he opened the door, two men armed with pistols forced their way into the joint.

This prompted a brief scuffle before the victims surrendered.

According to police, the gang then demanded the day’s sales and grabbed Sh10,000 and mobile phones.

In the process, one of the gunmen shot Mwangi at close range in the neck before they stepped out and ran away.

It is not clear if he was shot out of provocation or he was targeted, police said.

Mwangi was rushed to a nearby clinic and later transferred to Mama Lucy Hospital where he was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment.

Police visited the scene and recovered a bullet head.

No arrest has been made so far but a hunt on the gang is ongoing, Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei said.

Cases of armed robberies have been on the rise in the past months amid a campaign to address them.

Elsewhere in Kawangware, in the city, a suspected thug was shot dead in a botched robbery.

Police who were on patrol said they came across a gang of two in Kabiro and challenged them to surrender but they tried to escape in the Monday morning incident.

According to police, there had been robbery incidents reported in the area earlier on in the night.

It was then that the officers opened fire and killed one while his accomplice managed to escape on foot.

A homemade gun capable of firing was recovered from the slain suspect with one spent cartridge of 9mm, police said.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending identification and autopsy.
