A police officer, who was a father to one of the victims of the Mukumu Girls'food poisoning tragedy, shot himself dead in his house at Siala Kaduol Police Station in Gem, Siaya County on Sunday evening.

Police Constable Maurice Tilison Chisihavi was on duty when he used his own firearm to kill himself.

Gem Sub County Police Commander Cecilia Kemboi confirmed the incident.

"He shot himself in the chin and the bullet exited on the upper part of the head, killing him instantly," Kemboi said.

Kemboi said that the deceased could have been distressed before his death.

"He is a teetotaler and we suspect he could only kill himself if he was distressed," Kemboi said.

The Sub County Police boss also noted that the deceased was affected when news of food poisoning emerged from Mukumu Girls in Kakamega.

"His daughter is one of the victims of the Mukumu Girls High School food poisoning incident. This had greatly affected him in the last few days," Kemboi told the Star.

Kemboi said that his daughter is so far out of danger and has since been discharged from a Kisumu-based hospital and went home to Kakamega

Investigations are ongoing to establish the real motive of the suspected suicide.
