A police officer was Wednesday arrested after he shot and injured two people in a scuffle between two groups in Umoja, Nairobi.
The bodyguard is attached to Embakasi West Member of Parliament Mark Mureithi Mwenje.
Witnesses said the incident happened when a group allied to former area MP George Theuri stormed a meeting called by Mwenje prompting a clash at a swimming pool in Umoja 1 area.
The injured were rushed to local hospitals with life-threatening injuries in the thigh and abdomen.
Mwenje alleged that the rival youth affiliated to Theuri reportedly stormed the swimming pool area at the local National Government Constituency Fund offices where he was clearing structures in preparation for a bursary issuance exercise on Thursday.
“They stormed the swimming pool whose management is still under the former MP's people and stopped what we were doing forcing us to retreat into a library,” said Mwenje.
The legislator said the rowdy youth, armed with machetes and other crude weapons, attacked them, forcing them to retreat to the library area where they still pursued them.
He further claimed that they then attempted to snatch a gun from his bodyguard but were unable to.
It was then that the bodyguard came in and shot two of the said attackers in the 2 pm incident.
Mwenje went ahead to claim that his life is in danger, appealing to Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to provide him with enough security and intensify the probe into the incident.
Theuri denied any involvement in the incident, saying he was at work when the violence and chaos erupted.
He, however, claimed he had been informed that the clashes began when a group of youth started destroying structures that had been serving members of the public at the swimming pool area.
Theuri also condemned the shooting, which he blamed on private security, and not police officers attached to any police station in the constituency.
Police arrived at the scene and managed to arrest and disarm the bodyguard for grilling.
He was detained at Buruburu police cells ahead of planned arraignment.
Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei said they are investigating the matter further with an aim of taking action.
