Police have identified the driver who died on Sunday morning following an accident at the Pangani underpass on Thika Road as James Ogola.
Ogola, a mechanic at Fitmax garage, was driving a Mercedes Benz S300 shortly after Saturday midnight when the car rammed onto a pavement wall and burst into flames.
The Star has learnt that the car belonged to a client, Joanne Muthoni Mwangi.
Muthoni, who was still in shock, said she had no idea of the accident until she started receiving calls from concerned people who knew her car.
Ogola had picked up the car on Thursday for servicing.
Police on Sunday said the driver had lost control of the car, registration number KCT 985J, while negotiating a bend in the tunnel.
They suspected he was driving at a high speed.
Witnesses said Ogola managed to get out of the vehicle but unfortunately was overwhelmed by the fire flames.
He fell about one meter away and died on the spot.
Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei confirmed that the fire was put out by the Nairobi City County Fire Brigade.
Starehe Sub-County Police Commander Fred Abuga said Ogola had sustained burns to his limbs proving it difficult to identify him using fingerprints.
"It was not possible to obtain the fingerprints due to the nature of the burns. We were exploring any angle that could give us some hint on who he might have been," he said.
Ogola's body is preserved at City Mortuary where it was taken after the accident, while the vehicle was towed to Pangani Police Station.
