Joyce Aoko: Kenyan woman who was brutally attacked in Albania brought back home

She has been ailing since August 2022

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, yesterday confirmed the evacuation of a Kenyan citizen working in Tirana, Albania.

According to the statement released on Wednesday, the ministry said they followed the alert received from social media about Joyce Aoko, who urgently requires medication attention.

In the statement seen by Mpasho.co.ke, the ministry said that it is reported that unknown people brutally attacked Aoko at her place of work in August 2022, leading to serious injuries.

Aoko was then hospitalized for treatment, but her condition is still critical, hence the need for better medical attention.

"Ms. Aoko was brutally attacked by unknown persons at her place of work in August 2022 which led to serious injuries. She was hospitalized for treatment and has been in critical condition ever since. Unfortunately, she needed specialized neurological care which was not available in Albania. ," the statement read.

While they continued to urge the government of the Republic of Albania to conduct speedy and thorough investigations to bring the perpetrators to book, the ministry said they found it in Ms. Aoko’s best interests, to bring her home to complete her journey of healing among her loved ones.

The Government of Kenya commenced to facilitate her immediate medical evacuation from Albania to Kenya.

The statement said that Aoko arrived at Wilson airport, yesterday 25th January at 6.30PM and was received by the Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, Ms. Roseline K Njogu.

She was to be taken to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) for further treatment.

The State Department will also offer free counseling services to the family before and after her arrival.

According to police reports, Aoko was reported missing before being found in a critical condition. She currently requires assistance with eating and breathing through tubes, and needs help adjusting her position in the hospital bed.

A GoFundMe page has been created to raise $500,000 for her non-trauma rehabilitation at the Brain Neurological Rehabilitation Center.
