The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has disclosed that a high number of Kenyans die in road accidents between Friday and Sunday.
In a report seen by the Star, Sunday had the highest number of fatalities in 2022 with 896 deaths which was an increase from 816 in 2021.
In 2022, Saturday had 819 fatalities, followed by Friday with 669, Thursday -527, Wednesday- 557, Tuesday-551 and Monday 656 deaths.
In 2021, Saturday had 838 deaths from road crashes, Friday- 666, Thursday -593, Wednesday- 535, Tuesday-511 and Monday 612 deaths.
According to NTSA most fatal road crashes occur between 4 pm and 9 pm with the peak being between 6 pm and 8 pm.
Last year during the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, NTSA said pedestrians crossing at non-designated or unsafe areas get knocked by speeding vehicles.
They further stated that poor lighting at the pedestrian crossing points and major highways, driver fatigue, drink-driving, and high speeds on major highways also contribute to the fatalities.
NTSA said it advocates and calls for more efforts towards ensuring road users involved in any road crashes receive justice.
“The theme also puts a spotlight on traffic law enforcement, thorough investigation after a crash to find out if a crime was committed and to prevent a recurrence, criminal prosecution where appropriate and civil compensation,” read the statement.
