Food distribution exercises in 12 counties affected by drought began earnestly in November. President William Ruto took his cabinet members to drought-stricken areas, where locals received donations.
On Saturday, December 17, first son Nick Ruto also took up the challenge. Nick went to Narok county where he spoke to locals and distributed food.
His interaction with locals was captured on cameras as they spoke about food shortage.
About 14 counties namely Laikipia, Marsabit, Garissa, Isiolo, Kilifi, Kwale, Samburu, Tana River, Tharaka Nithi, Turkana, Wajir, Kitui, Kajiado, and Mandera are classified under Alarm drought phase.
Seven counties including Embu, Narok, Taita Taveta, Makueni, Meru, Nyeri, and Lamu are in the Alert drought phase
Food distribution is part of mitigation measures put in place by the Kenya Kwanza Government together with development partners to address such challenges.
Distribution of the relief food is a response to President William Ruto’s call for the private sector to help the government fight the drought that has left more than 4.5 million Kenyans in need of food.
