Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has lauded the government for abolishing boarding schools in primary schools from January.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang' said on Tuesday that parents will have to take their Grade 1-9 children to day schools.

Alai said the move is welcome as some parents have abdicated their parenting responsibility by sending their children to boarding schools.

"Good move to abolish boarding in Primary Schools. Parents must not escape their responsibilities by pretending to send their kids away to boarding schools. Stick with your children who are in primary schools and mould them properly," Alai said.

The government's move is in line with the recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms that junior secondary which will start in January 2023 will be domiciled in primary schools.

The junior secondary will accommodate learners from Grades 7-9, meaning parents will stay with their children all through the learning phase.

In his address while in Mombasa, Kipsang' said that parenting is a primary responsibility of parents and cannot be shared with teachers or outsourced.

"We only co-parent with teachers but we cannot outsource parenting from the teachers,” he said.

“We must create a way in which we can be with our children and the only way is through day schooling," the PS said noting that parents must be with their children during the first nine years of their learning.
