A Machakos University student has died after he was attacked by thugs in Machakos town.

Machakos sub-county criminal investigations officer Fredrick Ikaal said the male student succumbed at Kenyatta National Hospital on Sunday.

"The student succumbed to the injuries on Sunday after he was attacked by thugs at Kathemboni area within Machakos township on December 1," Ikaal said.

Ikaal spoke to the Star on phone on Monday, December 5.

The incident has sparked protests among Machakos University students.

The students are currently involving police officers in running battles within Machakos town.

This is the second time the students are demonstrating over what they term as increased insecurity.

Security officers had earlier held a meeting with the students' leadership chaired by Machakos County police commander Issa Mohammud before the protests were called off.

The student's attack comes at a time when police have intensified security operations in Machakos town and its environs.

Fourteen robbery with violence suspects were last Friday arrested in the town.

Mohammud said the suspects were nabbed in a sting operation conducted within Machakos Town sub-county on Friday.

"Last night, we carried out operations within Machakos sub-county and arrested 14 suspects," Mohammud earlier said.

All the suspects were locked up in lawful custody at Machakos police station.

Mohammud said 120 stolen phones were recovered during the swoop.

He said some of the nabbed suspects were convicts who were released in February 2022.

The suspects will be arraigned in Machakos Law Courts on Monday.
