A 5 storey building collapsed in Ruiru after tenants were evacuated following cracks on the pillars of the building.

The building collapsed at 4 am in the morning after the execution on Sunday evening.

Before the building fell, the evacuation had been reported by National Construction Authority (NCA) and the Ruiru OCPD to Kiambu governor Kimani wa Matangi who carried out the execution together with firefighters in the area.

“Tenants can no longer stay in this house because its columns- which are supposed to support it have cracked. It cannot stand for long. If not for the neighboring house that is supporting it, it could already be down,” said Wamatangi during the execution.

This is the second building to collapse in Kiambu county this week ,the other collapsed on November 17, in Ruaraka claiming two lives.

It also adds to a list of more than 8 other buildings which have collapsed in 2022 and has in turn elicited conversations online.

See some of the reactions below:

benard M. Mageto: first time that authorities have acted before tragedy struck

Charles Kithinji: NCA should help citizens by giving details of reasons after painting the huge crosses s on buildings especially if it's structural because we've seen many cases where many buildings that had the crosses get occupied after the constructor paints or applies cement to hide

joe maina: Nobody here is talking about steel manufacturer's.. that's where we should start..those are the people causing all this..today even nails are no longer what they used to be..

SafeSchoolsKE: For once the security agencies and county gov acted swiftly yesterday to save lives before the calamity struck. Hongera @NPSC_KE and @KWamatangi

Jeremiah Kariuki: Disaster Management (preventive) part of it at work, We need more of such. Judiciary to get involved too... luckily, no one had dashed to courts to stop the evictions.

Asiachi George: Though collapses this is positive , people were evacuated before. This is the way it should be , PROACTIVE not always reacting.

Benji Ndolo:Weka chuma Y-18, client checks feels it's too expensive..puts Y-12, county inspector comes mbona nyumba kubwa hivi nzito hakuna 18, developer says wewe kula hii 50k bahasha boss amesema. Then this happens and we all pretend to be so surprised. Kenya manze

Universal Hawk: Engineers and contractors, it has not been an easy month! At this rate, we may have to inspect almost all buildings within kiambu and Nrb. NCA kazi yenu ni kuharass wazee na huko ocha wakinjenga Choo! This is very bad for the industry!

Patrick P Wamalwa: In view of this, let us have an audit of all storey buildings in Kiambu and Nairobi environs. Most are just death traps. Let us act before it late
