Biting drought has affected the county

The drought situation in the country is leading people to do extraordinary things in order to sate their hunger.

A sad incident occurred in Nyakinyua village in Sirikwa ward Kuresoi North constituency where two brothers aged 4 and 2 ate a chameleon that their elder brother had cooked for them.

The two children are now fighting for their lives in Molo sub-county hospital after being rushed to the hospital by their mother, who found them unconscious after she returned home from work.

Thankfully, neighbours had already performed some first aid before the kids were rushed to a nearby clinic in the village.

"Their mother is a hustler, and she does small manual jobs to cater for the family," a neighbour revealed. They also asked well-wishers to try and support the single mother of nine.

Mother Joyce Chemng'etich recounted that her seven-year-old son had added the reptile into a meal of potatoes that he was cooking.

"When I asked him why he had prepared chameleons for his siblings, he told me it was because of hunger," Chemng'etich said.

Benard Warui the Molo sub-county medical superintendent explained that the two kids were stable and responding well to medication.

The drought situation in the country has continued to worsen with reports indicating that, 4.35 million Kenyans are going to bed hungry. This indicates that several Kenyans are in dire need of humanitarian assistance.

The hunger crisis comes on the back of a series of man-made shocks and natural disasters that have simultaneously affected the IGAD region.

Laikipia, Tana River, Tharaka Nithi, Isiolo, Mandera, Garissa, Turkana, Wajir, Samburu and Marsabit counties are now in the alarm phase.

Embu, Kitui, Makueni, Meru, Narok, Nyeri, Taita Taveta, Kwale and Kilifi are in the alert phase, while Baringo, West Pokot and Lamu are in the normal drought phase.
