Kenyan roads must be some of world's most dangerous to drive in. As a country, we have lost uncountable lives as a result of road accidents. According to National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) statistics, road accidents have claimed a total of 1,917 lives between January 1, 2016 and August 18, 2016.

27.3 percent of those fatalities are motorcyclists, 15 percent pedal cyclists, drivers (12 percent), passengers (nine percent) while 8.8 of them are pedestrians. This is a very worrying status for a country that's looking forward at growing its Gross Domestic Product in double digits. We cannot just keep losing such numbers of able-bodied people and expect our country to grow as expected.

Now, Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi escaped death by a whisker today afternoon, after his sports utility vehicle veered off the road and rolled at Annex on the outskirts of Eldoret town. The driver was preventing a head on collision. He was helped out of the car by Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago.

The MP, who escaped unhurt, said a driver coming from the opposite direction veered towards his car while overtaking.

"This forced my driver to veer off the road but we ended up in a ditch. Nobody was hurt. The governor helped me out of the car and I was taken to the Moi Teaching And Referral Hospital for a check-up," he told the Star.

Machakos Town MP Victor Munyaka was also involved in the accident. Wanyonyi's car was in a motorcade of members of the Agriculture committee who were in Eldoret to inspect projects.
