It's really saddening to see how former female boxing sensation Conjestina Achieng has fallen from grace to grass. Huyu dada amepitia masaibu si haba.

Latest news from the lakeside city of Kisumu has it that Conjestina has been readmitted to a psychiatric ward at a Kisumu county hospital.

She was taken to the hospital by a well-wisher earlier today. Her elder brother William Ochieng said that her condition has been deteriorating since she was discharged from Nairobi's Mathari hospital in 2013.

Ochieng said their father died because he could no longer bear seeing his daughter suffering and going without aid.

“Her condition is a heavy burden on us because we cannot cater for her health expenses. I am only with my mother who is getting older," he said at the hospital.

Conjestina's family has faulted the government saying it abandoned her after she was mentally incapacitated. Ochieng said they were disappointed in the government and other organisations that have not helped her.

“We are disappointed because this is the girl who once placed this country on the map with her outstanding performance in the boxing industry," he said.

She became the first African woman to hold an international title when she beat Ugandan Fiona Tugume to take the vacant WIBF Middleweight title. He also added that it was painful to watch his sister fade from stardom.

“Some people have even turned her into a business. They collect money using her name but she is not helped in any way,” said Ochieng.

He asked the government and well-wishers to come to their aid, especially since Conjestina has a son who is due to write his KCSE examinations this year. 'The boy might be locked out due to lack of school fees', he said.
