The gorgeous Yemi Alade is not a stranger to Kenya. She's performed in the country more than twice. Perhaps you never knew the inspiration behind her song "Johnny," which quickly became a household jam across the continent.

In a recent interview with Daily Trust, Alade talked about her recent listing in the BET Awards as a nominee. She expressed how happy she was when the news reached her;

"It is difficult to describe. I received the news with an unfathomable joy in my heart. The MTV MAMAs news came barely three hours after I was nominated for four Nigerian Entertainment Awards. I was grateful, humbled and thankful. It also boosted my zeal to keep doing what I do. I feel one step closer to bagging a Grammy award."

However, she has since blasted the BET organizers for treating African singers like they're not important. This was after the winners were awarded backstage, 5 hours before the main event happened.

Speaking of the concept behind her hit song, "Johnny", she revealed that "Johnny was recorded in Enugu during my nationwide media tour. It was produced by Selebobo and it narrates the tale of a cheating lover. It is based on a life experience which I unconsciously wrote about during the session. The success of ‘Johnny’ is jaw-dropping; it is currently the most viewed video by an African female artiste of all time."

Yemi is our Mpasho WCW because she is a strong woman, truly talented and a child of Africa. She is an inspiration to many youth in her home country Nigeria as well as here in Kenya. Yemi has not won a major award yet but she'll definitely do in the next one year. Her nominations so far include a MOBO, Nigerian Music Awards and the most recent BET Award nomination.

"God gave me the song ‘Johnny,’ without telling me he was blessing me. If you go online you will see dance videos made by fans across the world, from France to the Netherlands to the U.S.A to Canada," she adds.
