Adult films are one of many non essential products that will always have a market around the world.  The animal instinct in man is such that he almost requires the feeling he gets when sitting in front of a screen, watching other people engaging in what really should be, a very private act. Mpasho Investigates the adult video “industry” in Kenya and seeks to find out what makes it so lucrative.

VIVA-RIVA-3

We had the pleasure to interact with a veteran of the Kenyan pornography industry who shared a wealth of information into this lucrative ecosystem that often goes unnoticed to the ordinary mwanainchi. Joseph The “King Of Porn” is his name and he willingly sat down with us to shed light on pornography in Kenya.

In this 4 part series Mpasho seeks to demystify the rumors that surround Kenyan pornography and give a true account of what really goes on.

Part 1 delves into knowing the following:

  • MEET THE MAN
  • THE FIGURES
  • VERNACULAR

MEET THE MAN

Joseph is one of the 1st producers of Kenyan porn films. And he has literally been a one man show. He struggled to come up with the initial capital to hire actors, get filming equipment and the technical team behind the movies.  And once the movies were made, he was the main salesman with a small team of freelance vendors who earned on commission.

Joseph used to operate a secondary school in Nyandarua. He first came to Nairobi in 2007 with his wife and it was during this visit that he came across a pornography advertisement in one of the major dailies which read “Buy Kikuyu, Luo, Kisii porn now at only ksh 1000″.

Joseph later realized that the man behind the advert was running a scam as he was selling blanks to customers. On seeing the demand for pornographic material he decided to join the industry and produce genuine material. He started off by doing drop offs to customers that put in orders over the phone. Joseph however admits that not every potential buyer is accommodating; as many Kenyans see pornography as an abomination. Even customers who buy the DVDs are often in a hurry and don’t want the vendors to see their faces or mark their vehicles.

But with many people willing to be in front of and behind the camera; and many others ready with cash to buy the product, the industry can only grow from here.

THE FIGURES

Street Kids of Kinshasa

It wasn’t always this way but right now the average price of a DVD is KES 500. Joseph says one movie on average makes him a profit of about 100,000/-; though a great movie with the cast speaking in vernacular can make up to several million shillings.

Joseph says one of his biggest problems though has been vendors who duplicate his movies and end up making more money than him because their costs are minimal. He says he has got around that by offering big commissions on sales and giving police a “cut” to arrest certain vendors. It has however eaten into his profit.

But given that Joseph pays his actors on average 20,000/- per two scene movie, he’s pretty pleased with the amount of money he get’s to take home.

VERNACULAR

The Kenyan porn industry has a diverse mix of flavors and according to Joseph, certain communities watch more porn that others. The reason behind this is because more movies are shot with actors speaking in certain vernacular languages.
