Peer pressure mixed with poverty is the number one reason why many people get into crime. 17 year old Kevin from Kibera says that young people see their friends with expensive clothes and phones, but because they come from a poor family where three meals a day is a luxury, the only option is to get it from those who have.

Another thing is idleness, which Makodi from Kariobangi says is the main reason young people get into crime. He feels that once someone has finished primary school or high school, he/she should not be allowed to get idle. If their parents cannot afford to keep them busy, the government should be able to open up things like computer schools to help them.

Have you ever wondered where many street kids go to when they grow up? These are the people who grow up to be the most dangerous criminals in the country. This is because of the hard life they are used to. They start by asking you for ten bob by the roadside, then they graduate to snatching, mugging, and eventually they become hardcore criminals. The solution is not getting these people out of the CBD, but to come up with a structure that will make sure they don’t get into crime or become homeless in the first place.

According to Makodi, who is a reformed criminal, most of those who fail in school and their parents or relatives can only help them get low paying jobs, end up becoming thugs to live a good lifestyle.
