Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has of late been very vocal about they way City Council askaris are harassing Nairobi hawkers, where some even get killed.

There have been several cases of even other people who are not hawkers being harassed or attacked by the city council officers popularly known as Kanjo. (See post below)

Here's what Mike Sonko wrote;

I am saddened once again by the manner in which the Nairobi City askaris are intimidating, harassing and brutally murdering hawkers. My previous request to have the rogue Askaris arrested fell on deaf ears of the concerned authorities. However, yesterday, I was assured by the DPP Kiriako Tobiko that action will be taken. The Director of CID Mr. Muhoro Ndegwa also confirmed the same position to me.

As the Nairobi Senator, I cannot sit back and watch innocent Kenyans being killed like wild animals. So far, over the last 12 months, 19 hawkers have lost their lives they include The late IRUNGU KAMAU; THE LATE HARUN NJOROGE; THE LATE JOHN KIMANI; THE LATE STEPHEN WAWERU; THE LATE PETER MUHORO; THE LATE KABOGO MWANGI AND THE LATE EDWIN MUNDIA (will confirm the remaining names once I get their postmortem reports).

Recently, a female hawker was arrested, raped and bottles inserted in her private parts. On December 31, 2015, a hawker by name Kazee was arrested by the askaris, beaten and forced to lie down on the road and unbelievably, the County van registration number KAW 696Z ran over his head killing him instantly and sadly again this was done by askaris who are well known and have been positively identified yet no action has been taken as they continue harassing innocent hawkers bragging that they are untouchable. The body is still at City Mortuary awaiting burial.

I condemn in the strongest terms possible these beastly acts. I have given the concerned authorities a 24-hr notice to arrest the culprits failure to which I will be left with no alternative but to tender my resignation to the Senate Speaker. This is not about playing politics or seeking sympathy from the electorate but my conscience cannot allow me to continue earning salaries and allowances as the people whose interest I am supposed to protect are murdered in cold blood. Such brutality can only stop if we stop corruption and I undertake not to leave any stone unturned in this war. My friend Governor Kidero must ensure corrupt officers at City Hall are sacked. It is high time the Nairobi City County Assembly make laws that will help in the regulation and protection of hawker's activities and interests.
