We miss the good old days, in particular, the shows aired on Voice of Kenya with its memorable slogan ‘Sauti ya Kenya’ which later rebranded to Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).

Here is a list of the most memorable programs from back then.

1. Tausi- ‘Tausi ndege wangu’ the catchy song introduced what has got to be one of the greatest Kenyan TV shows of all time with very talented cast such as Ashina Kibibi who ensured the production of the show was pure success and people were left glued on their screen to watch the latest episode. Tausi presented a Swahili lifestyle which was of course shot at the Kenyan coast juggling various themes from Love, family and work.

2. The bold and the beautiful- Who can forget the bold the beautiful really? This is a show that people claimed to have no end with a very long story line with cast such as Rick Forrester growing up in the series. The bold and the beautiful was the then the fifty shades of grey of that time, not that it was that extreme but back then scenes of casts caressing each other and kissing, made parents feel uncomfortable to the point of chasing away their kids or shutting down the television set.

The soap opera was drawn from a storyline of a fashion industry ruled by the Forrester family in the posh area of Beverly Hills. The Forresters though seemingly had it all were faced by challenges and had their own struggles just like any other household varying from divorces, death, drug abuse etc.

3. Vitimbi- Vitimbi has got to be the father of Kenyan comedy. The comedy show included popular names such as the late Mzee Ojwang’, his wife Mama Kayai, The late Masanduku, Likobe and later on the likes of Ngomongo, Mogaka and Nyasuguta joined the cast. Vitimbi was a comedy show of family surroundings that featured plenty of drama and solutions to problems displayed.

4. Vioja Mahakamani- If there is a show in a courtroom that was a favorite then it has got to be vioja mahakamani. How can one forget the popular introduction of those summoned, “Kwa majina najulikana kama…” The show was particularly loved for the comedy in it as executed by the likes of Makokha, Alexander Maasai, Ondiek Nuka quarter etc. Viewers loved the light moments and silly mistakes presented and the role placed by Lucy Wangui, the serious judge in the courtroom drama series. Vioja Mahakamani later on rebranded with the likes of the late Jamal Gaddafi taking over as the judge. It is also worth noting that the show hyped cultural diverseness by presenting the cast to be from different ethnic groups.

5. Omo pick a box-Is it the box or the money? The entertaining show hosted by the late Reginah Mutoko was a favorite for Kenyans with contestants and an audience. The contestants were to either make quick cash by accepting the offer to be given money or take a bold step of choosing the box in which one would either win big money or a car just to mention some of the prizes or risk it all by winning small prizes such as diapers.

6. Je huu ni Ungwana- Je huu ni ungwana? The catchy introduction of Leonard Mambo Mbotela’s show was enough for Kenyans to be glued to their screens for the show. The show had a number of casts playing various roles with Leonard Mbotela doing the narration. The show focused on teaching viewers on the moral values by demonstrating the wrong in which actors would play various roles and later on criticizing the deed with Leonard Mbotela’s teachings on the morals of the story.

7. Mke nyumbani- Yummy, as Kenyans we possess an eating culture, a soft spot for good food and if there is a good cook in the country to learn from then Alice Taabu is a perfect pick. Alice Taabu who worked as a nurse before fame was impactful back in the day on her show Mke Nyumbani which demonstrated her culinary skills to the viewers. So great was Mke nyumbani that the show scooped an award in 2002, the gourmand world cookbook award.

8. Walker Texas ranger-Chuck Norris had us on this one. Walker Texas Ranger was a popular action series in which Chuck Norris used his martial arts skills and his fantastic use of guns to do away with the bad guys and Kenyans loved it.

9. Tushauriane-Written by Felix Osodo, tushauriane was massive with great reception from fans. The show was not just a typical Kenyan soap opera as it addressed key issues at the time which were overpopulation. Tushauriane gained international recognition for addressing issues on family planning. The show’s aim was to try flattening the birth curve in the country and it went further to also have themes on tribal lines and marriage.

10. WWE Wrestling- The list concludes with wrestling, a popular program on KBC back then. WWE included shows such as Raw and smackdown as we got entertained to watch our favorite wrestler battle it out with the opponent. Kenyans were entertained by the likes of The Undertaker, Shawn Michael, Hulk Hogan, The rock, Yokozuna, Stone cold Steve Osteen, Hacksaw etc. under the leadership of CEO Vince McMahon.
