Mapenzi Yanashangaza! Garissa University Survivor Marries KDF Soldier Who Saved Her

On April 2nd, 2015  Kenyan woke up to the devastating news about the Garissa University Attack. Armed gunmen ambushed students in the wee hours of the morning; a cowardly, senseless and bloody attack that left 147 students dead.

The attack saw many condemn the barbaric act. All we can hope for is that our security is now tight, and this pointless loss of life will never happen again. Well, Maureen Mayengo, a Garissa University attack survivor is currently the talk of the town after she recently married Ivan Okello a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier who rescued her after hiding in a closet for 12 hours.

The 21-year-old lady revealed to SDE that they had met before but decided to tie the knot after the horrifying incident. Maureen Mayengo now lives with her defender (husband) in Lanet who is currently deployed in Somalia.

“I resolved to marry him after the attack. I saw a shield and defender in him."

Although Maureen and the other survivors were transferred to Moi University main campus in Eldoret, many say that they are still traumatised.
