A man has been arraigned before a Machakos Court charged with brutally assaulting his lover after a disagreement.

Nicholas Nyamai appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Evans Keago charged that on January 19 this year while at Kyumbi Township, Mathatani sub location Machakos County, he attacked one Josephine Mwongeli Muteti inflicting on her grievous injuries.

According to the prosecution statements, the two were having a good time together in a popular nightclub before hell broke loose after the complainant demanded some money from Nyamai. This is said to have infuriated the accused and he allegedly descended on his partner with kicks and blows.

Ms Muteti was later rescued by members of the public and rushed to Machakos level 5 hospital and admitted.

The accused denied the charges and was released on a Sh 25, 000 cash bail or an alternative Sh50, 000 bond pending the mention of the case on February 1.

At the beginning of last year, business operators in Machakos County were advised on the need to install CCTV cameras on their premises to help in the fight against crime.

Speaking during a County Secretariat meeting on January 23, 2020 on Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) Machakos DCIO Rhoda Kanyi said the use of CCTV cameras had greatly boosted the war on crime and terror and as such entrepreneurs should invest in them.

The officer who once worked at the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) in Nairobi singled out lack of the crucial gadgets in Machakos and warned this was a security lapse that could be exploited by criminals.

She noted that the majority of business places in Machakos ranging from night clubs, supermarkets and roads leading in and out of the town lack functioning cameras which could help security agents to access crucial evidence in case a criminal activity has been carried out.

Kanyi cited a grisly incident in one of the drinking joints within Machakos town’s CBD on the night of January 2 last year where a commercial sex worker was killed, and her throat slit by a man.
