Case in point
Silas Sifuna, a resident of Bungoma, approximately 409km from the capital Nairobi bagged a cool sh. 1,041,675 bonus for correctly predicting 14 of the 17 matches offered in the weekly Mega Jackpot (MJP).
He had it coming. When Lillestrom FC forward, Thomas Olsen, scored to help the hosts force a 2-2 draw against visiting Molde FC in the Norwegian Eliteserien League on Sunday night, he had no idea his strike would mint a new millionaire far away in Kenya. His goal came in the 87th minute at the Arasen Stadion in Lillestrom, rescuing a point for the hosts.
The celebrations of his goal echoed across the seas all the way to Kenya when the full-time whistle confirmed Sifuna as a bonus winner.
“I had predicted the outcome of this game would be a draw. Since it was the last fixture in the MJP, I stayed late in the night to monitor it.”
“I was sweating profusely, I didn’t even eat. The away team was leading 2-1 past the 80th minute and I was praying hard for the home side to score,” Sifuna said.
“My prayers were answered seven minutes later when Olsen drove in a powerful shot to level the scores 2-2. I jumped on to my feet and almost woke up my wife with a scream. I was very happy.
“The goal has made me a Lillestrom supporter. I have also resolved to name my next child Thomas Lehne Olsen whether it’s a boy or a girl,” the thrilled winner added.
“I have written this name on a piece of paper and kept somewhere in the house,” the 37-year-old-father of three underlined.
This windfall has also saved Sifuna from turning to financial institutions or shylocks for a loan to complete his pressing projects.
“I now have the money to fulfil my plans. I’m going to build a house first and then purchase a motorbike for personal use,” the Pharmaceutical Technologist revealed.
Sifuna also hailed SportPesa for instant pay-outs having been playing for the last three years where his highest win before Sunday was KSh18,000.
