Cant wait for the day to end despite the fact that it is a Tuesday: one of the best days
for most Kenyans because it’s a free pizza day, am eagerly waiting for the Reggae
night. I remember them days when reggae was only meant for rastafarians, weed
smokers, hustlers and could be played on weekends only at the famous F1 and F2
attracting large crowds. The dress code was; safari boots commonly known as
“sahara” since the fine leather and rubber sole makes them comfortable for desert trip
thus the name sahara, fitting jeans trousers, a black t-shirt with some reggae graphics
infront and a multi-colored scarf (all borrowed). We could walk in groups of seven or
more than 7 so as to bail each other out from phone snatchers, muggers and random
robberies in the streets. Internal fights always arose and minor reasons from
stepping on someone on the dance floor to dancing with someone’s girlfriend.Getting
black eyes dint deer us from raving the next weekend although some fights got more
incensed that daggers gangs would engage in street fights leading to serious injuries.
Inside the overcrowded dance halls the sweating and vigorous dancing as disc
jokers hyped the crowd with dance hall hits. To be on the safe side we danced near
each other in the crowded halls to ensure security was guaranteed.Beer was served
cold despite most of us being under 18 years where the law prohibited alcohol to the
under aged. Who cared after all it was our time to have fun. Incase you danced with
your friend's boyfriend or anyone she had a crush on, she could come closer to you
and made sure she embarrassed you infront of your “new man” “Toa viatu zangu na
pia unipee trao yangu....” (give me back my shoes and my trouser too). After all the
embarrassment, all you could do is sit down and try as much as possible to please her
so that next time when you borrow her she wouldn’t refuse to lend the dance hall gear.
There were tough gangs from slums and other feared areas, these gangs would terrify
innocent revelers at will. Their blood shot eyes made them scarier, and who would
engage in a war with a bhang smoker who is safer only behind bars. Nowadays reggae
music is played in uptown clubs from Monday to Sunday. Guys are more disciplined
violence is minimal with bouncers keeping vigil on law breakers..Anyway, am happy we
have developed and now we can dress whatever we want; reggae for mature people.
Thank you reggae family, see you tonight at Galileo.
