Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua has earned praise from motorists for personally managing traffic during the just concluded Masaku Sevens International Rugby Bonanza.

Apart from steering the county ahead in terms of development, he took time to ensure the Rugby event went on smoothly and was spotted directing traffic for over four hours to clear a traffic buildup that was threatening to cause a major jam.

Unlike last year’s event which witnessed massive traffic jams lasting over eight hours, this time round, Mutua left nothing to chance and commanded traffic at strategic points within Machakos town to ensure drivers were at ease.

The Star learnt that the Governor was watching Rugby at the Kenyatta Stadium at 9pm on Saturday when he was alerted that congestion was building up in Machakos town center and all traffic officers had left.

“Dr. Mutua made a few phone calls and when he realized that by the time the police showed up, the smooth flow enjoyed so far would be lost, he hit the road and used his wits to ensure that there was no snarl up ,’’ said his spokesperson and Press Secretary, Mutinda Mwanzia.

According to a motorist Tevin Kitheka , Mutua walked with his team down Masaku highway and personally talked to motorists and re-arranged traffic flow, as revelers took turns and requested for selfies with the Governor.

“We are so happy to see our Governor caring about our welfare. Last year was a nightmare on the roads,” said Kitheka.

Mutua stopped traffic from proceeding to the congested City center, closed some roads and directed revelers to the People’s Park.

The Park is one of Mutua’s flagship projects and where revelers enjoy music , relax and unwind for free.

Last year’s Masaku 7s was notorious for long traffic jams and ratchet behaviour caused by people stuck in traffic. This years' event saw diversions leading to smooth flow of traffic and good behavior among revelers.

“I wish to thank all those who participated in the event and pledge that next year it will be bigger and better,”said Mutua.

Mutua was later joined by the County Security team lead by the County Police Commander, Jacinta Wesonga and they directed traffic for four hours up to 2a.m at night.
