A cloud of sorrow hovered over Kisii, following the death of several students after the bus they were travelling in overturned on Kisii-Kilgoris road today. According to the police, the students of St Mary's Nyamagwa Girls Secondary School went on a road trip to celebrate the purchase of the 71-seater bus the day before. It overturned in Rioma area while they headed back to school.

Scores of other students were injured and they were rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Hospital for treatment. The hospital's CEO Ondari Otieno said three students died while five were in critical condition. The five were to undergo surgery, while a total of 68 students were taken to the hospital with injuries. A witness said some of the students had deep cuts on their heads.

"The driver of the bus also seemed to be new. It is said he had driven the bus from Nairobi on Thursday night," the witness added.

The accident comes barely two days after one pupil died and seven were injured after their school bus overturned on Lang'ata road in Nairobi. The victims were among 64 passengers aboard a bus belonging to Meru's Victorian Academy. It was a 51-seater. The students were headed to Bomas of Kenya for the 90th edition of the Kenya National Music Festival.
