The Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK) has gone to court to obtain an order to force supermarkets to stop giving customers sweets instead of their change.

The body also wants an independent audit done on Nakumatt supermarket shelves and till prices. This follows complaints from customers that they've been having erroneous price calculations on their receipts.

COFEK claims that the supermarket has been misleading customers on shelf prices which are different from the amount deducted at the till.

Since consumers went to social media to blast the supermarket for the varying prices, the chain has instituted an internal audit to establish the cause of the problem.

MD Atul Shah termed the cases as "isolated and inadvertent" and said that the supermarket was planning to install digital price checkers as one of the measures to counter the cases.

The parties involved in the case will now appear in court for a hearing on 22nd of this month.
