Hii ni noma! Former President Daniel Arap Moi's grandson was today taken to a Nakuru court for allegedly stealing two mobile phones worth Sh19,000. Collins Toroitich allegedly stole the smartphones on July 17 from his daughter May Chelimo and her friend Betty Chebet.

According to the Star, Toroitich's lawyer Ochang' Ajigo challenged the prosecution for failing to arraign the accused within the 48 hours prescribed by law.

"The accused was arrested on Monday during working hours and had not been charged until today. This is total infringement of the rights of my client," Ochang' told the court.

He said Toroitich had called his daughter, who is the first complainant, for lunch at a hotel in Nakuru where she went with her friend. The girl is a second year student at a local university. Ochang' said the three were eating in a joyful mood when Toroitich took his daughter's phone away so they could interact smoothly.

"After the meeting, none of them remembered their phones until after they alighted from a taxi. They left the phone in the taxi," he said.

The lawyer said there were efforts to settle the matter at family level but that Chelimo insisted on going to court.

"Chelimo's mother is a former friend of the accused and seems to be bitter. He (Collins) was ready to pay for the lost phones," he said.

Toroitich appeared before chief magistrate David Kemei and took plea in the chambers following a request by the defense counsel. He was released on a cash bail of Sh7,000. The matter will be heard on August 15. Ochang' said Toroitich is the son of Jonathan Moi.
