Kenya has a rich tradition of adoption, and it can be a wonderful way to build a loving home for a child in need which has led comedienne Nasra Yusuf to ask for a guide on how to adopt a child.

Eligibility to Adopt:

Applicants must be at least 25 years old and at least 21 years older than the child they wish to adopt with some exceptions for relatives or those adopting a spouse's child.

The maximum age limit for adoption is 65 years old.

Single people and married couples can both apply.

All applicants must undergo a social worker evaluation to assess their suitability for adoption.

The Adoption Process:

Contact a Registered Adoption Society:

These government-approved organizations are there to guide you through the process and provide support. One can find a list of registered adoption societies on the Directorate of Children Services website.

Home Study:

A social worker will visit your home to assess your environment and readiness to provide a loving and stable home for a child.

Child Selection:

Adoption societies will match you with a child based on your preferences and the child's needs. This may involve reviewing profiles or meeting with children.

Bonding Period:

You will have a chance to spend time with the child to build a relationship before finalizing the adoption. This is a crucial step to ensure a successful placement.

Court Hearing:

A court will review your application, the home study, and reports from the adoption society. If everything is in order, the court will finalize the adoption order, granting you legal parenthood.

Adoption is a life-changing decision that can bring immense joy to both the adoptive parents and the child.
