As much as heartburn starts with the word heart it isn't a heart problem it is a gastric problem that happens in the oesophagus.

Heartburn is a type of heat and pain that happens in your oesophagus and if it's not treated earlier it can cause a very big irritation.

Heartburn has the most common symptoms, unlike any other medical condition. To know that you are suffering from heartburn check out these symptoms.

•A burning sensation in your chest, behind your breastbone.

•Burning pain that rises up toward your throat.

•Having a bitter or sour taste in your mouth.

It can be caused by various things but mostly it is caused by consuming certain foods which include acidic and spicy foods, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, smoking or being overweight.

1) Keep a food journal

What better way to treat something than knowing what causes it? Knowing what triggers your irritation is the perfect way to prevent it from occurring.

Keeping a food journal will help you know the type of foods that trigger your heartburn making it easier to avoid the heartburn. 

2) Avoid overeating.

Overeating can cause you to have heartburn Because this will increase the chances of you having stomach acidity.

Since you haven't given your body enough space to function. whenever you are eating also leave some space for water and air. don't fill your tummy too much to the point you can't walk straight.

3)Lose some weight if you are overweight.

Excessive weight puts pressure on your stomach, which increases the risks of getting stomach acidity which causes heartburn. Doing exercises for at least 2 hours in week can be a good way for you to lose weight.

4) Avoid laying flat just after eating.

Laying down immediately after eating will cause more harm than good. Yes, we do agree that certain foods are a natural piriton like " ugali" but don't lay down immediately after.

Laying down immediately after eating will increase the acidity levels in your stomach try and eat at least 2-3 hours before bedtime.

5) Chew Gum.

As much as it may sound weird, chewing gum can be very helpful to someone having heartburn. Chewing gum helps increase saliva production which may help keep stomach acid where it belongs.
