Nigeria bowed out of the 2023 FIFA Women World Cup after suffering an emotional defeated from England’s Lionesses following a  4-2  loss in the post-match penalties.

The West African failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage after Lionesses forward Lauren Games was red-carded for foul play.

England's Georgia Stanway miscued her kick to mark an false start for the Lionesses in the shootout.

The Lionesses went on to score the remaining four penalties to edge out the Super Falcons.

The Super Falcons duo of Michelle Alozie and Desire Oparanozie failed to convert from the spot.

England will take on either Colombia or Jamaica in the quarters.

The pair will settle scores on August 8 at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium in Australia.

Lionesses had managed maximum point in the group stage but found the going tough against a well-oiled Nigerian side. They are fevourites for the title following the elimination of defending champions the US in the hands of underdogs Sweden.

James will be a big miss for the lionesses having scored  three goals and recorded as many assists to lead the team's top-scoring chart.

Prior to their defeat, Nigeria had finish second in group 'B' with five points- a point behind group leaders Australia .

Surprisingly, the Falcons beat Australia 3-2.
