Women who have shaped the Kenyan radio scene over the years

Over the years, the women mentioned below have been able to educate, entertain and inform Kenyans of the daily occurrences.

• Compared to the Internet, television, and newspapers, it has the greatest audiences and the broadest geographic reach.

Several women have used the many forms of communication, including radio and broadcasting, to entertain, raise awareness, voice their ideas, inform the public, and enlighten other women of their own rights and privileges.

The following is a list of Kenyan women who have over the years bravely shaped the broadcast radio entertainment industry:

  • Caroline Mutoko 

When you mention the radio media industry you can't fail to think of Caroline Mutoko. The beautiful Caroline Mutoko is one of the pioneers of the media industry. She originally started on radio as a young lady at Capital FM 98.4 in Nairobi.

She oversaw the Kiss 100 Morning Program for many years, becoming a well-known and influential figure.

Her charisma, melodious voice, and her mastery of proper pronunciation resonated well with her audience thus acquiring the name radio queen.

She currently works as a Marketing Manager at Radio Africa Group Limited.

  • Lynda Nyangweso

Lynda Nyangweso is among the most outspoken radio personalities that Kenya has ever had. At times, Kenyans would even wonder how she looks like in appearance because of her aura when she went on air. In 2010 Lynda got employed at Kiss Fm.

Linda Nyangweso was a radio host of the morning Drive Program. Her breakthrough came when Caroline Mutoko and Shaffie Weru, became aware of her through their work on the Presenter Show.

In February 2021, she officially quit radio.

The dazzling Kalekye Mumo has been in the media industry for 15 years now. She started out as a music artist and slowly transitioned into radio.

She was first employed at Capital Fm 98.4 hosting the breakfast show and later joined Kiss Fm. There, she hosted two award-winning shows, Rush Hour and Morning Kiss for 10 years. 

In 2016, she left Kiss and began her career as a TV presenter by serving as the host of The Couples Show, one of the most enduring family-friendly reality shows, for 2 years.

Kalekye later honed her skills as Kenya's favorite TV host by conducting the most in-depth interviews on K24Tv's Talk Central.

She is currently a PR consultant,  a public speaking and communication skills teacher and an event concept developer.  

We'll remember her for being a vibrant and confident lady under her own skin. 

  • Sheila Mwanyigha

Sheila Mwanyigha has been on the media industry for quite some time now as a radio and TV personality. She started out as a recording artist and later made a transition into radio presenting, where she enchanted her listeners with a melodious voice. She started out at Kiss Fm and later moved to Easy Fm,now Nation Fm.

Over the years she progressed to manage radio production and programming, host the morning show on NTV, and eventually work in TV production.

Sheila Mwanyigha, who had worked for Nation for 11 years, was well-known on television where she co-hosted the morning show with Kobi Kihara. In September 2015, Sheila departed NMG.

She now has a YouTube channel called Sheila Lives Out loud and is an editor at Rembesha Kenya. 

  • Amina Abdi

Amina Abdi well known for her vibrant soul and presentation skills started out in Homeboyz radio when she enrolled at a radio school that had just been launched. When she was done with the curriculum she topped her class, thus securing a position at Homeboyz radio.

Later Chris Kirubi offered her a job at Capital Fm 98.4, hosting alongside Soulo. Since then she has never looked back and is still a big player in the entertainment industry. 

Since then, she has held positions at prestigious media organizations and outlets such as Ebru, K24, NTV's The Trend, and Maisha Magic East's The Turn Up. She is also an Mc, Event Facilitator.

  • Kamene Goro

Kamene Goro started her career as a news anchor at Ebru Tv at the age of 21. At the time, she was the prime-time news anchor.

Before joining the media industry she worked as a paralegal and later become a radio presenter of the NRG radio breakfast program prior to joining Kiss FM in June 2019.

At Kiss Fm, she shared the stage with the controversial Andrew Kibe and afterward Jalang'o, who left radio to pursue a career in politics.

In January 2023, she left radio to embark on her own endeavour's. 

  • Massawe Japanni

Massawe Japanni is a talented Kenyan radio host who presents in Swahili. Now a radio presenter at Radio Jamb0, she stands out as an outspoken and drama-free host and moderator.

She started off as an intern at Baraka Fm in Mombasa. People were so enamored with her engaging voice, hard work, presence, and grasp of Kiswahili that soon after, more and more people started to become her fans.

She then had the opportunity to work for several radio stations, including QFM, Milele FM, and now Radio Jambo.

  • Kwamboka

Sheila Patricia Kwamboka came into the spotlight during the airing od Big Brother Africa season 3. She represented Kenya on the TV program.

She later joined the show again in its 5th season due to high public demand. She also worked as a news reporter at K24  and later switched to Vybez Radio.

She is now Kamene Goro's replacement for the Kiss 100 breakfast show which she now hosts alongside Oga Obinna.

  • Nazizi

Nazizi started of as a rapper and a member of the group necessary noise. The group has released music with the likes of Bebe Cool under the moniker East Africa Bashment Crew.

In 2019 she set her fit into Vybez radio hosting the show CEASE N SEKKLE alongside Muzikal Sheriff.

In February 2023 she quit radio to pursue other ventures. 

  • King Kalala

Prudence Chepkirui Tonui popularly known as King Kalala is currently a breakfast show radio presenter at NRG Radio. 

In 2020, Kalala declared her love for radio during an interview with the media personality Amina Abdi on The Trend. Her voice made it clear that she would make the finest radio host because she had her own following and the will to make it successful.

Amina promised her that she would do something about it. Later in the year Prudence hosted the late night program NRG Circle at NRG Radio with Reedah Yvone, Ibu Ike Nene and DJ Niche 254.

She also co hosts with the 3 Men Army a weekend program called NRG Plug.

She has worked her way up where she is currently a breakfast show host at the same radio station.
