The word Throuple has become the latest rage in the country after some celebs opened up about participating in it.

In 2020, celebs like Mungai Mbaya and Kaz Lucas have revealed that they had participated in trouple's much to the excitement of many Kenyans.

So what is a throuple's? It is a blend of the words three and couple. A throuple is an ongoing relationship in which three people are romantic partners, as opposed to a threesome, which is a single sexual encounter with three people.

There might be a mixture of genders and sexual orientations in the trio. When three people live together, have children together, and get married, only two of them are able to do so legally. Throuples might be sexually active or just romantic.

According to Dictionary.com, the word first emerged as early as 1994 in an internet Usenet discussion of non-traditional relationships.

It's use was still seen sporadically in the 2000s on online chat rooms, but was popularised in 2014 by Stephen Colbert on his TV show The Colbert Report in a story on a lesbian throuple‘s wedding.

RuPaul’s Drag Race also brought much attention to the term in 2017 when the contestant Derrick Barry discussed his throuple with an artist and fellow drag queen.

In 2018, a throuple also appeared in the Netflix show Insatiable. Since then, it has become

With the release of the popular 2020 Netflix documentary Tiger King, the word throuple was brought back into the public eye.

Throuple vs. polyamory vs. open relationship.

Although there is some similarity between the names, a throuple is not nearly the same as polyamory or an open relationship. Each of these three concepts is a subset of moral non-monogamy.

With the knowledge and cooperation of all parties, polyamory is the practice of or desire for having close relationships with more than one person. People who practice polyamory adhere to the notion that having multiple romantic relationships at once is entirely acceptable, desirable, and achievable.

In an open relationship, a romantically connected couple (or throuple!) chooses to have sex with individuals outside of their partnership, typically without forging strong emotional ties or committing to anything.

There are various options that might be in play

A V relationship

In a V relationship, the 'hinge' person has two relationships, but their partners are not romantically involved with one another. It can be represented visually as the letter V.

Each V relationship has a unique dynamic in how the individuals interact with one another.

Sleeping with people outside the triad.

It might be acceptable for the throuple members look for romance or sexual activity elsewhere. Or it could be considered cheating by certain people. The mutually agreed-upon norms that regulate a given connection will determine everything.

Sleeping arrangements.

While some triads sleep together every night, others alternate partners to provide each couple meaningful time, while still others choose to sleep alone. The fact that the arrangement considers each person's requirements is what matters most.
