Google online searches have revealed heightened interest among Kenyans keen on enhancing their religious experience via purchases, religious songs and texts during the holy month of Ramadan.

According to the just-released Google Search Trends, many are anxious to observe the fasting timelines as set out for various regions based on the sighting of the moon.

Sharon Machira, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager in Kenya said, 'Search helps people explore and find answers to the questions they have. During Ramadan, people trust Google Search to help them with answers to their questions.’

According to Google Search, faithful professing the Islamic faith searched for the Ramadan timetable to inform the exact time to break or start fasting based on their current location. Searches made mostly came from Kenyans living in Nairobi (Jamia), Bungoma, Nakuru, Mombasa, Tana River, Tanzania, Garissa, Kisumu, Eldoret and Busia.

People searched for Islamic poems related to the fasting season (qaswida za ramadhan) while others sought information on how to sight the Ramathan moon. Ramathan Nasheed (prayer Muslims perform nightly during the month of Ramadan) reported heightened searches while Tanzanian music crooner Diamond Ft Mbosso’s song on Ramadan also received favourable mention.

‘Meaning of Ramadan’ is also featured in the month-long searches with people searching for insights on whether one should conduct prayers before fasting. The Search results also showed an interest in suitable texts to use during Ramadan.

During Ramadan, people also went online to search for sources of dates on sale tax-free while many chose to spice their cooking by seeking information on suitable recipes sale of dates received notable mention with Muslim faithful going online to search for how to source for dates ‘tax free’ .

People also searched for ‘mapishi ya ramadhan alhidaaya’ as they looked for suitable meals to prepare during the Ramadan period.
