Gender-based violence on women has been proven to be higher compared to that of men.

But this does not mean that men are not also victims of Gender-Based Violence. Their cases are not equally responded to.

In most cases, a man who has attacked a woman faces more or even worse penalties as compared to a woman who had attacked a man.

In the recent case of the late Caroline Kangogo's alleged murder incidences, the public did not treat it as a form of Gender-Based Violence.

The issue tended as a murder case, but did we hear anyone talk about gender-based violence meted on the men who were murdered?

According to the 2014 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey  (KDHS), 44 percent of men between 15-49 years have experienced physical violence against 45 percent of women, while 21 percent of married men were emotionally abused by their spouses.

In a piece by Kalekyehealth, she mentions several men who have been brutal attacked by their wives and the response was not as intense and most of the cases went unreported.

Simon's face, neck and shoulders were brutally crisscrossed with a panga.

Joseph was also attacked a few years ago with a knife and the matter remained unreported. Richard was burnt with hot water. These offences were allegedly committed by their wives.

In most cases men will always be referred to as weak when a woman attacks her, could this be the reason why these cases go unreported.

Men also have human rights and it is only fair that their matters are also taken into consideration.

Men too need a certified safe space where they can openly talk about their issues and be heard and their privacy also respected.

GBV organizations need to give an ear to men and handle both genders equally.
