Property of unknown value was today destroyed when a fire broke at an apartment block at Matakari Estate in Embu Town.

However, no life was lost or injury reported in the morning inferno that broke out from one of the houses in the three-story building and quickly spread to the adjacent houses.

In the mishap, five families lost all their property, with the cause of the fire being linked to an electric fault.

It took the effort of area residents and a firefighting engine from the County Government to put out the fire that was growing bigger and spreading fast.

Tenant, Kevin Ouma, said he was woken up by screams from neighbors at around 10 am who had noticed fire and smoke coming out from one of the houses whose owner was not present.

He said they did all they could to contain the fire, but despite the quick response from neighbours and area locals, the fire spread quickly to the adjacent houses.

Locals hailed the county fire fighting team for the quick response that went a long way in averting what they said could have turned out to be ‘collateral damage.’

Area Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Maurice Nyaga called on the county government to procure additional fire engines to up its firefighting capacity.
