Detectives investigating the killing of four people in Kitengela on August 8 have recovered a gun fired at the scene of the attack.

Kajiado county police boss Muthuri Mwongera on Tuesday told the Star in a phone interview that the gun was not used in the killing but is suspected to have been fired at the scene.

Mwongera, however, did not disclose when the gun was recovered.

“We have recovered that gun and detectives are following crucial leads, which may lead to the arrest of more suspects,” the county police boss said.

The four who were murdered on August 8 are Mike George, Nicholas Musa and brothers Fredrick Mureithi, Victor Mwangi.

Mwongera said the case is complicated and the detectives should be given time to investigate it “thoroughly” and make sure those arrested have a hand in it.

He could not confirm or deny the presence of 16 cars at the scene of the murders minutes before the four were murdered, saying the police are investigating the allegations.

Several eyewitnesses have claimed a man fired a single bullet in the air to stop the killing of the four people but none of the killers could be moved by the burst of the bullet.

It was further claimed the man who fired in the air walked to his vehicle and drove away after the killers decided to "finish our job".

“All clues the DCI gets are treated as claims until proved otherwise. As I said, the matter is complicated, the police will still get to the bottom of this,” Mwongera added.

Joseph Macharia, the uncle of the two brothers, said on Wednesday morning he is optimistic justice will prevail for his late nephews.

“I am on my way to court in Kajiado now. They arrested one suspect who the police are telling us is providing more information. I am sure the truth will prevail and all the suspects will be arrested,” Macharia said.

The prime suspect in the case, Benson Molonyie ole Mwangi is expected to appear for the third time in court before resident magistrate Becky Cheloti on Wednesday.

Mwangi is accused alongside other suspects, not in court, of the murder of the four young people. The four bodies have been interred.
