After spending a cold night on the rain with the casket of his wife, Charles Mwenda has found justice. 

The High Court in Meru awarded Mwenda Ksh 1.5 Million for the infringement of his rights on the fateful night of May 27, 2020.

According to Justice Edward Muriithi, the police used excessive force and treated Mwenda inhumanely as he was going to bury his wife. 

Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai was ordered to settle the Ksh 1.5 Million compensation.

Charles Mwenda, had obtained necessary documents to transport the body of his wife Faith Mwende from Malindi to Meru alongside few family members. 

On reaching the Meru-Tharaka Nithi border, they were stopped and the 31 mourners, including her two children ordered to go back to Malindi. 

After pleading with the police officers, they ordered him to board their vehicle with the casket. 

He was ferried to Kianjai police station where he spent the night on the cold. 

While standing outside the police post, it began to rain, and Mwenda had to shove the casket under a lorry to protect it from the rain. 

During this period, stringent Coronavirus containment measures had been put in place. There was a cessation of movement in and out of Nairobi and Mombasa counties.
