Police in Mombasa are hunting down the killers of a Dutch national and his watchman in an upscale apartment in the Shanzu area of Kisauni Sub County.

Police identified the foreigner as Herman Rouwenhorst, 55, who was discovered after his girlfriend sent a distress call near the Serena Beach hotel.

Strangely, police found the woman who raised the alarm, identified as Riziki Cherono, with her hands tightly strapped on the steering wheel.

The incident was confirmed by Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata who expressed hope that detectives will get into the bottom of the mysterious murder.

Elungata said the murder was an isolated case and not deliberate killings targeting foreigners, tourists or members of the expatriate community.

“She alleged that she was driven in her car to the said place from their apartment,” a police report filed at Bamburi Police Station under OB 6/4/6/2021 reads in part.

Reports show that the house was in disarray when the police arrived and requested the crime scene be left undisturbed.

Officers untied and accompanied her to the apartment called Rocco where they found the body of Rouwenhorst lying on their bed having been murdered with his hands and legs tied using a rope, and mouth gagged.

“Also they established that a night guard by the name Evans was found bleeding and unconscious before he later succumbed,” the report indicates.

Rouwenhorst’s body was moved to Pandya Hospital Mortuary in Mombasa awaiting postmortem.

The incident comes days after a German national committed suicide in the Bamburi area last week.

Krabbe Deitter had been accused of killing his girlfriend Cynthia Akinyi in Mtwapa and was being sought by detectives.

He died on the spot after jumping from the fifth floor of an apartment they were staying in.

Police are still investigating the incident that has stunned the locals.
